For years local residents have called for action to reduce rat-running in our area, but the Labour council did nothing. Now the council has accepted thereís a traffic problem and consulted residents on a range of options to tackle it. David Gladstone of Barnsbury Square says ìIíve lived here long enough to remember the introduction of the first Barnsbury traffic scheme in 1970 and the bitter arguments it gave rise to. We have been waiting ever since for the scheme to be evaluated and improved and it is to the great credit of the Lib Dems that the Council has finally got to grips with the problem and asked residents what they want done about it.î The clear result is support for option 2, a 20 mph zone across the area. The council is proposing a version of that scheme, which experts Arups say could cut traffic by up to 30% without new road closures. Local resident Andrew Robinson comments ìIíve lived in Barnsbury since 1983 and Iím a regular car driver, cyclist and of course pedestrian. Iím very pleased the Lib Dem council is making the area safer and pleasanter for residentsóeven at the cost of a bit of inconvenience for drivers. There has to be a balance, and I think weíve got it right.î Lib Dem Cllr Bridget Fox, who has campaigned hard for action on traffic, says ìWe now have the first concrete proposal to introduce traffic reduction measures in Barnsbury in a generation, and one that everyone can live with. This offers a real change for the better. I hope we can unite to make it work in practice.î
