The money is on top of the previously-announced capital expenditure plan of £30m over three years. The Committee agreed the proposals. The money will be invested in specific projects to raise attainment in Islington schools, and for new IT provision. Specific projects include: - GCSE Easter revision booster classes - ëUpward Boundí Project - targetted at year 10 and 11 pupils in two secondary schools, to improve achievement - Developing a pool of multilingual teaching assistants, focussing on the Somali and Turkish communities. - Providing laptop computers for teachers Cllr James Kempton, Chair of the Education & Libraries Committee, said ìThe Liberal Democrats are firmly committed to raising education achievement in Islington. These plans provide some new money where it is needed most. ìThe Education Commission also highlighted the key importance of Islington pupils keeping up with developments in IT for the future. These plans help us to do that. ìEducation is at the heart of Islington, and I am proud that the Liberal Democrat Council is providing so much additional resources for our schools. ìThere is still more to do, but taken together with the huge capital funding programme we announced earlier this year this will make a real difference to the education of pupils in Islington. ìWe are grateful to the Dame Alice Owen Foundation for providing some of this money and making these plans possible.î The money has been made available as a result of a successful bid to the Dame Alice Owen Foundation (£260,000), and retaining payments to CEA (£488,000).
