Leader of the Council Cllr Steve Hitchins has personally taken Lib Dem Shadow Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport Nick Harvey MP to visit Arsenalís ground at Highbury and inspect the plans for the new stadium. They discussed Arsenal's plans with Ken Friar, Managing Director of Arsenal Football Club.Nick Harvey MP said "I have been impressed by the professionalism with which the Council is taking its role as the local planning authority. It is clear that they are taking particular pains to take into account the views of both Arsenal and its fans, and local residents."Cllr Steve Hitchins said ?Councillors are looking at this issue very closely, and will make a decision at the meeting on 10 December. This professional handling contrasts strongly with the fiasco which Chris Smith made of plans for the new Wembley Stadium, and for the proposed new sports stadium at Picketts Lock when he was Sports Secretary."Just last week The House of Commons Select Committee issued one of the most damning reports I have ever seen over his handling of that matter. "Liberal Democrats take Arsenal's plans very seriously, and will consider all aspects of their proposals at the planning meeting."
