Londoners are paying more than anyone else for a pint of beer and the Government should act to give them a better deal, according to Baroness Sarah Ludford, London's Liberal Democrat MEP.
The MEP has written directly to Patricia Hewitt MP, the Cabinet Minister responsible for trade & industry, telling her that this is "yet another way in which 'Rip Off Britain' is hitting my constituents' wallets and purses hardest of all."
According to the Good Pub Guide 2002, a pint of beer bought in London costs an average of £2.18, compared to as little as £1.68 in Lancashire. She demanded to know what the Government is doing to ensure that "Londoners are getting a fair deal from their local pub".
Baroness Ludford commented: "I can understand that independently-run locals have to charge a little more because of the higher costs of living in London, but that is less of an excuse for the large pub chains that stretch the length and breadth of the land.
"These chains ? which are charging northerners much less ? should give Londoners a better deal when they go for a pint."
