Recycling in Islington has been given a major boost this week. The Lib Dem controlled Council has backed plans for recycling to start on council estates. A pilot scheme will start on estates with about 2,500 properties in the financial year starting in April 2001. The decision builds on the success of the Liberal Democrat administrationís pledge after taking control to introduce recycling to all street properties in the Borough before November 2000. The Committee heard that this target was achieved within that time and that a high percentage of the residents are now taking part in the scheme. Councillor George Allan, Chair of Environment and Conservation Committee said after the meeting: ìRecycling is popular and well supported. I am very pleased that we can now make start soon on extending it to council estates. ìThe success of the kerbside scheme means we have already more than doubled recycling in the Borough in the past year. Extending it to estates means we can do even betterî.
