As if the Tories were not in enough disarray without a leader, an ICM poll last week showing that people agree (by 40% to 36%) that the Lib Dems are providing more effective opposition to the Labour Government than the Conservatives are. For the Lib Dems the Tory Leader void is not the only reason why we are now taking on the 'official opposition' role. We are the only party offering a credible, coherent, alternative programme for government. We started showing that we had clear and robust policies in the last parliament - it helped us notch up more election successes and now we have a chance to focus on our priorities for Britain. For me, an active Lib Dem, that means over this Parliament we can focus on four key areas - the environment, reconnecting people and politics, civil liberties and public services. With this strength we can speak for people on these issues and to make sure that the Governmentís delivery matches peopleís expectations. We have an interesting four years ahead.
