Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP and Cllr Laura Willoughby are to hoist the European flag again above Islington Town Hall. In October Islington Council removed the flag from the Town Hall's flagpole as a precaution after a loophole which meant the Council needed planning permission to fly the European flag. The Angel Neighbourhood Forum planning sub-group considered the matter at its meeting last week, and granted permission to fly the European flag. The Town Hall will now fly three flags: the London Borough of Islington, the Union Jack, and the flag of the European Union. Commenting on the raising of the flag again, Sarah Ludford MEP said: ?It is especially appropriate to be raising this flag at Christmas because peace is a symbol both of Christmas and of Europe. I applaud the Council for being positive about the security and the prosperity which Europe helps to bring to the people of Islington. I am glad the Council is showing that it is positive about Europe."Cllr Willoughby said "This year Islington residents will benefit from nearly 3m from the European Social Fund. We are proud to fly the flag, alongside Islington's own and the Union Jack. Flying the flag is a small but meaningful step towards cementing Islingtonís success not only in the UK but in Europe as a whole. "It's not a choice between Britain and Europe - it's about working with our European neighbours. Liberal Democrats believe in a strong Britain in a strong Europe."
