Councillor Barbara Smith received confirmation from the Housing Department last week that almost all the public lights on the Marquess and Sickert Court Estates will be fixed by Christmas.
The Housing Department agreed to do this work after Councillor Smith organised an ?after dark? inspection of the Estates on the 11th November and discovered that 64 were not working. She sent this information to the Director of Housing along with a letter demanding action.
She was pleased to hear that not only will they be fixing the lights but will also be taking up her idea of making ?after dark? inspections a regular job for Estate Services Officers. It has also been confirmed that they will follow another of Cllr. Smith's recommendations and take tape recorders with them when carrying out their day to day work so that they can record any problems as they see them.
Cllr. Smith said: ?I decided to carry out this inspection because I was aware that many of the tenants on the Estates were worried about the lighting. 64 lights not working is totally unacceptable.
?In other parts of Canonbury residents would telephone Streetscene if a street light was not working and would telephone again if it had not been fixed within days. Estate residents should not have to put up with a situation which other Canonbury residents would not tolerate.
?I am very glad that the Housing Department have said that they will fix the lights and that in the future they will carry out inspections so that we donít get this situation again.?
